Benzene is a petroleum by-product with an unusual sweet smell. Benzene has been used extensively throughout the world in solvents, degreasers, synthetic fibers, thinners, adhesives, dyes, rubber, resins, detergents, common household products, plastics, paint, and many other industrial, refinery, chemical and household settings. Because of the wide use of benzene, the chances of exposure are varied. The unusually sweet smell of benzene is often unforgettable to the refinery worker once they have smelled benzene. The sweet odor is unmistakable. However, sweet odor of benzene, or specifically the sweet smell of benzene, can indicate danger as this chemical can have dangerous and deadly effects for those that are exposed to it for long periods of time. At high levels, benzene like other aromatic hydrocarbons can be extremely toxic. In fact, Benzene has been classified as a Class A carcinogenic by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Chemical workers, adhesive workers, refinery workers, rubber workers, workers in the printing industry, leather workers, press workers, painters, gasoline distributors and jet fuel distributors are most likely to have been exposed to the sweet odor or smell of benzene. These workers may have inhaled the benzene fumes or had their skin exposed to the chemical. Extended dermal or skin contact is dangerous, toxic and potentially deadly. Benzene is a sweet smelling chemical that also occurs naturally in the environment, but the major threat from this chemical comes from the benzene that is used in a range of manmade products. Benzene has been associated with an increased risk for developing acute myeloid leukemia or acute myeloid leukemia – AML leukemia. Acute myelogenous leukemia and acute myeloid leukemia cause the bone marrow to produce a high number of immature white blood cells, known as blast cells. The bone marrow is responsible for the production of red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. However, a defective bone marrow (caused by prolonged exposure to benzene) often produces a high number of immature white cells and can therefore not produce enough healthy red and white cells or platelets.
