Berylliosis - Chronic Beryllium Disease CBD Lawsuit

Berylliosis, or chronic beryllium disease (CBD), is a chronic lung disease caused by exposure to beryllium. Berylliosis is an occupational lung disease, associated with aerospace manufacturing, beryllium mining or manufacturing of fluorescent light bulbs. Beryllium compounds are used in internal phosphor coating in many light bulbs. Berylliosis is incurable, but treatable.

Berylliosis can be caused by breathing or inhaling a single or prolonged exposure of beryllium. Ther eis some speculation that skin exposure or contact to beryllium can also cause CBD. In the 1930’s occupational exposures indicated numerous cases of bronchitis and pneumonia-like symptoms among workers mining and refining beryllium.

Later in 1946, a cluster of berylliosis cases associated with fluorescent lamp manufacturers were apparent in the United States, and the lamp industry stopped using beryllium in 1949.  In the United States the Beryllium Case Registry contains ovetr 900 records relating to extraction and fluorescent lamp manufacture and from the aerospace, ceramics and metallurgical industries.
